Celebrate National Night Out 2008:
Tuesday, August 5, 2008
For two consecutive years the City of Durham Police Department has been selected as a national award winner for its outstanding coordination of, and participation in, America's Night Out Against Crime with record numbers of citizens and businesses participating. The Durham Police Department debuted on the NNO awards scene in 2006 with a ranking of #11 among similar-sized cities across the nation, and in 2007 moved up the ranks to #10 among similar-sized cities.
National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
The 25th Anniversary of National Night Out will be observed Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 by the National Association of Town Watch. It's not too early to begin plans now for another unprecedented celebration. Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods 'celebrate' NNO with a variety of events and activities such as:
- block parties,
- cookouts,
- visits from local law enforcement agencies
- parades, exhibits,
- flashlight walks,
- contests, and
- youth programs.
