Give Neighborhood Crime & Drugs A Going Away Party!
Tuesday, August 4, 2009
Join the Durham Police Department, City of Durham officials, other local law enforcement agencies and hundreds of your Durham neighbors for National Night Out 2009 on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods across the U.S. 'celebrate' NNO with a variety of events and activities such as:
- block parties,
- cookouts,
- visits from local police and sheriff departments,
- parades,
- exhibits,
- flashlight walks,
- contests, and
- youth programs.
NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. Plus, the benefits your community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night.
To be included in Durham Police Department’s NNO neighborhood visitation schedule for Tuesday, August 4, register your neighborhood event no later than Friday, June 26. Arrangements for special presentations must be requested through your district substation or your district’s crime prevention officer.
For more information, contact the department’s Sr. Public Affairs Specialist, at 560-4322 ext. 29194 or email Kimberle.Walker@durhamnc.gov.

Durham Earns Three National Night Out Awards in 2008
The City of Durham Police Department and two Durham communities have been selected as national award winners for outstanding participation in the 25th Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime, drug and violence prevention program. It is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). In the 2008 NNO awards competition the City of Durham maintained its No. 10 ranking among cities with populations of 100,000 to 299,000. The City of Durham debuted on the NNO awards scene in 2006 with a ranking of No. 11 among similar-sized cities across the nation and moved up the ranks in 2007 to No. 10.
Making a debut in 2008 as NNO "All Star" award recipients are Durham’s Azalea Park Apartment community and Audubon Park Homeowners Association. NNO All-Stars are individuals, organizations or programs honored for outstanding participation, leadership and/or assistance during the NNO campaign, as well as exceptional or innovative accomplishments which might not fit into other award categories.
Highlights of National Night Out 2008

Community Feedback About NNO 2008
"I'm sorry I didn't get to see you all (on the NNO neighborhood circuit) as well, but that's how it is with this type of event. I was very impressed with Sgt. Cates and your other officers. What was also impressive was that representatives from the Clayton PD came to Durham to see how it's done right. Congratulations! The Durham PD is setting examples for others to follow. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to working with your department on stories in the future. There is so much we can do beyond the crime blotter ... that I think will have a greater impact on the communities we both serve."

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your assistance and hospitality when two of my employees visited your agency recently. Lt. Hutchins and Captain Bridges recognize the level of professionalism your department displays as well as your ability to handle the National Night Out program in a manner that has gained the Durham Police Department national recognition. The purpose of their visit was to gain information that will help the Clayton Police Department in our first National Night Out, which we plan to have next year. These two officers gained valuable information while visiting your agency and were complimentary of your department as a whole."

"Many thanks to everyone who made it out to the Walltown National Night Out event! It was a fun evening and successful in many ways - particularly for getting the word out about the Neighborhood Watch program and getting neighbors out to meet and mingle with each other. I think it was a good sign that people realize crime prevention goes beyond an evening block party - that it's a year-round effort with neighbors working together to make a difference. A special thank you goes out to the volunteers, the Durham and Duke Police Departments and Duke University's Office of Community Affairs. The evening would not have been as successful without your support! Thanks again - we're already looking forward to next year's celebration!"

Special thanks to Mary Walker for her hard work and organizing skills - her efforts were much appreciated. Also, special thanks to River Forest President, Mr. Horace Bridges, and our River Forest neighbors, along with Rev. Dub Karriker and our Carriage House neighbors. Thanks to all of the board members and volunteers from both the Old Farm and River Forest Neighborhood Associations for their extra efforts. Also, thanks to David Harris for providing the public address system and music. Thanks to all of our sponsors and entertainers who helped make this a night to remember. "Our celebration was the biggest event yet (with over 350-400 attendees). We were generously supported by our community residents, by our commercial residents and by corporate organizations through the donations of door prizes, gift certificates or in-kind gifts. We appreciated all of the services that the Durham Police Department provided to our community for this event and for all the services that you offer to our community throughout the year."

"To all city officials, Crime Stoppers, firemen, city Police and Sheriff Departments of Durham, the management and staff of Azalea Park would like to thank all of those who participated the evening of the NNO 2008 celebration. Taking the time and making the effort to reach out to the citizens of Durham has formed the partnership needed to have a successful community willing to work together. We can not express how much we value your interest in our community and the response we had from the departments contacted eager to come out and join in the celebration with the families at Azalea Park Apartments."

"Cardinal Lake had approximately 100 residents in attendance. Every one really enjoyed the event and were impressed and surprised with the visitors we had. The men in our community acted as sponsors this year by providing most of the items needed to make this happen, however the ladies said they were going to show us how it really should be done next year. Thanks again for working with us this year. This will be an annual event in our community."
